12 pills and weight loss supplements nominal popular

This includes all types of pills, medications and natural supplements.

These are claimed to lose weight to help or at least easier to lose its weight in combination with other methods.

They tend to work by one or more of these mechanisms:

  1. Reduce your appetite so that you feel full so you eat less calories.
  2. Reduces the absorption of nutrients such as fat, you consume less calories.
  3. Increase the fat burning, adjust burn more calories.

Here are the 12 most popular weight loss supplements, pills investigated by science.

1. Extract Garcinia Cambogia

Garcinia cambogia fruit

Garcinia cambogia was worldwide after popular introduced in the show Dr. Oz in 2012.

It is a small green fruit, pumpkin-shaped.

The rind of the fruit contains hydroxycitric acid (HCA). It is the active ingredient of Garcinia cambogia extract [1] , which is marketed as a diet pill.

How it works: Animal tests show that the enzyme may produce inhibit body fat and increase serotonin levels to help reduce cravings ( 1 , 2 ).

Efficiency: A study of 130 people Garcinia compared with a placebo. There was no difference in the percentage of fat or body weight between the groups ( 3 ).

A 2011 review of 12 studies that examined Garcinia found that, on average, that weight loss of about two pounds (0.88 kg) over several weeks (caused 4 ).

Side effects: No reports of serious side effects, but some reports of minor stomach problems.

Conclusion: Although Garcinia result in modest weight loss, the effects are so small that they probably do not even notice it.

2. Hydroxycut

Hydroxycut [2] has been around for more than a decade and is now one of the most popular in the world loss supplements weight.

There are different types, but the most common is called simply "Hydroxycut".

How it works: It contains several ingredients that are claimed to help with weight loss, including caffeine and some plant extracts.

Efficiency: A study has shown that 21 pounds (9.5 kg) weight loss over a period of three months (caused 5 ).

Side effects: If you are sensitive to caffeine, you can anxiety, restlessness, tremors, nausea, diarrhea, and irritability.

Conclusion: There is unfortunately only a study of this supplement and no data on the long-term effect. More research is needed.

3. Caffeine

Caffeine [3] is the most widely consumed psychoactive substance in the world ( 6 ).

It is, of course, found in coffee [4] , green tea and dark chocolate [5] , and many processed foods and beverages is added.

Caffeine is a well-known metabolism boosters [6] , and often supplemented commercial weight loss is added.

How it works: short-term studies have shown that caffeine to increase your metabolism and burn fat by 3.11% up to 29% ( 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 ).

Efficiency: There are also studies showing that caffeine can lead to small weight loss in humans (run 11 , 12 ).

Side effects: In some people, large amounts of caffeine anxiety, insomnia, nervousness, irritability, nausea, diarrhea and other symptoms can result. Caffeine is also addictive and can reduce the quality of sleep.

There's really no need to supplement or pill of caffeine to take him, the best sources are the quality of coffee and green tea, which also antioxidants [7] and other health benefits.

Conclusion: Caffeine can increase your metabolism and increase fat burning in the short term. But can develop tolerance to the effects faster.

4. Orlistat (Alli)

Orlistat [8] is a medicine over the counter prescription sold under the name Alli and Xenical.

How it works: The pill works weight loss by inhibiting the breakdown of fats in the intestine, taken in less calories [9] fat.

Efficiency: In a review of 11 studies, orlistat, the weight loss of 6 pounds (2.7 kg) compared to placebo (increase 13 ).

Other advantages: Orlistat has been shown to slightly lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes I 37% in one study ( 14 , 15 ).

Side effects: This drug has many digestive side effects [10] are available, including non-oily stools, flatulence, frequent bowel movements that are difficult to control, and others. It can also contribute to a soluble, such as vitamins A, D, E and vitamin K.

In general, it is recommended that a follow- fat diet [11] while taking orlistat to minimize side effects.

It is interesting that a diet low in carbohydrates (no drug) has been combined as effective as both orlistat and a low-fat diet ( 16 ).

Conclusion: Orlistat, Alli or Xenical as is known, the amount of fat, the food is absorbed and helps to reduce to lose weight. It has many side effects, some of which are very uncomfortable.

5. Raspberry Ketones

Raspberry ketone is a substance found in raspberries, which is responsible for their characteristic smell.

A synthetic version of raspberry ketones [13] is sold as a weight loss supplement.

How it works: in the fat cells of isolated rat raspberry ketones increase fat distribution and increase levels of the hormone adiponectin, the weight loss (assumed in connection 17 ).

Efficiency: No single study raspberry ketones in humans, but a study in rats showed high doses, weight gain (reduced 18 ).

Side effects: may your burps smell like raspberries.

Conclusion: There is no evidence that raspberry ketones cause weight loss in human and rat studies, working with high doses.

6. Green Coffee Extract Grain

Green coffee beans [14] but is normal coffee beans that have not been roasted.

Contain two substances believed to be in weight loss, caffeine and help chlorogenic acid [15] .

How it works: The caffeine can increase fat burning and chlorogenic acid may slow the breakdown of carbohydrates [16] in the intestine.

Effectiveness: Several studies in humans have shown that green coffee extract can help people, weight (lose 19 , 20 ).

A review of three studies showed that the supplement, the more people lose 5.4 pounds (2.5 kg) than placebo, placebo (pill 21 ).

Other advantages: Abstract green coffee beans can sugar levels in the blood and lower blood pressure. It is also rich in antioxidants ( 22 , 23 , 24 , 25 ).

Side effects can cause the same side effects as caffeine. Chlorogenic acid can also cause diarrhea, and some people may be allergic to green coffee beans (be 26 ).

Conclusion: The extract from green coffee beans can result in modest weight loss, but note that many studies have been commissioned by the industry in order.

7. glucomannan

Glucomannan [17] is a type of fiber in the roots of the elephant yam, also found as konjac.

How it works: Glucomannan absorbs water and becomes a gel. It "is" in your intestines and promotes a feeling of fullness, helping you less calories (eat 27 ).

Efficiency: Three studies in humans have shown that glucomannan shown in conjunction with a healthy diet, can help people lose 8-10 pounds (3,6 up to 4,5 kg) weight in 5 weeks ( 28 ).

Other benefits include: Glucomannan is a fiber, the good bacteria in the gut can feed. You can also lower blood sugar, cholesterol and triglycerides, and is very effective against constipation ( 29 , 30 , 31 ).

Side Effects: Can bloating, flatulence and diarrhea cause and may interfere with certain oral medications, when taken at the same time.

It is important about half an hour before meals with a glass of water glucomannan.

Conclusion: Studies show that glucomannan fiber, when combined with a healthy diet can help people lose weight. Also leads to an improvement in various health markers.

8. Meratrim

Meratrim [18] is a newcomer to the diet pill market.

It is a combination of two plant extracts, which can alter the metabolism of the adipose cells.

How it works: You require to make it more difficult to increase the fat cells, the amount of fat that accumulates in the bloodstream and helps to make it burn stored fat.

Efficiency: To date, only one study has been done on Meratrim. A total of 100 overweight people on a strict diet of 2,000 calories, or a placebo or Meratrim (placed 32 ).

After eight weeks, the Meratrim group was 11 pounds (5.2 kg) weight and 4.7 inches (11.9 cm) from lost from the waist. Also improves the quality of life and reduces blood sugar, cholesterol and triglycerides.

Side Effects: There have been no reported side effects.

Side Effects: Green tea extract is well tolerated in general. It contains caffeine and can cause symptoms in people who are sensitive to caffeine cause.

Conclusion: Green tea and green tea extract may slightly increase fat burning, and can help you lose belly fat.

10 conjugated linoleic acid (CLA)

Conjugated linoleic acid [21] , or CLA, is a popular supplement fat loss for years.

It belongs to the "healthier" trans fatty acids and is naturally in some foods rich in animal fats as found cheese [22] and butter [23] .

How it works: CLA can reduce appetite, increase metabolism and stimulate the breakdown of body fat ( 38 , 39 ).

Efficiency: In a comprehensive review of 18 different studies, CLA weight loss caused by about 0.2 pounds (0.1 kg) per week for up to 6 months ( 40 ).

In another study, 2012 CLA may be about 3 pounds (1.3 kg) in weight compared to placebo (losing 41 ).

Side effects: CLA can cause various gastrointestinal side effects and harmful in the long term, could contribute to fatty liver, insulin resistance and increased inflammation.

Conclusion: CLA is to operate an effective aid to weight loss, but side effects in the long run. The small amount of weight loss is not worth the risk.

11. forskolin

Forskolin [24] is an extract from a plant of the mint family, claimed to be effective for weight loss.

How it works: It is believed that the increase of a compound into cells called cAMP to stimulate the fat to burn ( 42 ).

Efficiency: A study of 30 overweight and obese people have shown that forskolin reduces body fat and increases muscle mass while no effects on body weight. Another study of 23 obese women found no effect ( 43 , 44 ).

Side effects: There are few data on the safety of this supplement, or the risk of side effects.

Conclusion: The two small studies have shown conflicting results forskolin. To avoid this supplement until done more research is best.

12. Bitter Orange / Synephrine

A type of orange [25] contains bitter orange compound called synephrine [26] .

Synephrine is related to ephedrine [27] , it was a popular ingredient in the various formulations of weight loss pills.

However, ephedrine was because of how weight loss product banned by the FDA because of serious side effects.

How it works: synephrine shares similar mechanisms to ephedrine, but is less effective. You can reduce appetite and burn fat significantly ( 45 ).

Effectiveness: Very few studies have been done on synephrine, but has shown significant weight loss ephedrine short in many studies (since 46 ).

Side Effects: How ephedrine, synephrine may have related serious adverse effects on the heart. It can also be addictive.

Conclusion: Synephrine is a sufficiently powerful stimulant, and probably for weight loss in the short term effect. However, the side effects can be serious, so it should be used with extreme caution.

Prescription Drugs

In addition, there are many weight loss pills that have proven successful.

The most common are Contrave [28] , Belviq [29] , phentermine [30] and Qsymia [31] .

According to a recent review study in 2014 also weight loss pills are not working as well as expected.

On average, they can help you lose up to 3-9% of body weight compared to placebo ( 47 ).

Note that only when combined with a healthy diet to lose weight [32] . They are ineffective on their own, and only one solution to obesity.

Not to mention to mention the many side effects.

Of the 12, the big winners, with most of the evidence:

  • Weight Loss: glucomannan, CLA and orlistat (Alli).
  • Increased fat burning green tea extract and caffeine.

However, I advise orlistat because of unpleasant side effects, and to CLA by harmful effects on metabolic health.

This leaves us with glucomannan, green tea extract and caffeine.

These supplements can be useful, but the effects are modest at best.

Unfortunately, no supplement or pill really good for weight loss.

You can give your metabolism a little boost and help you to lose a few pounds, but that's where it ends, unfortunately.

Cutting carbohydrates [33] and eat more protein [34] are still the best ways to lose weight, and better combined than diet pills.

  4. Other than a safe-product-that-burns-fat, some caffeine-weight-loss-supplements which are unmarked as "caffeine containing" in such a way, still contain large doses of it. Guarana (another Hydroxycut ingredient), is one example. Even green tea, as helpful as it may be, is yet another source of caffeine, and green tea also commonly appears in Hydroxycut products.

    The thing to especially watch out for when seeking a safe products that burn fat, is using a dietary nutritional supplement that COMBINES the many different sources of caffeine into one, single product.
